The ERP DIRECTIVE FOR CHILLERS

Tier 1 of the ErP Directive 2016/2281 (Lot 21) entered into force on 1 January 2018. This Directive relates to product groups including ‘chillers for comfort air conditioning’ and ‘chillers for process cooling with high operating temperatures’.

The ErP Directive 2016/2281 states the minimum energy efficiency requirements that apply to the unit according to its use.

As a manufacturer, we have been legally obligated since 1 January 2018 to only sell units that meet the requirements of the ErP Directive – even if the design and conception of the unit took place prior to this date. We pay strict attention to ensuring that all the units we offer meet the efficiency criteria of the Ecodesign Directive in full.

RELEVANT UNITS

In defining the reference limit values, the new Ecodesign Directive distinguishes between the respective applications for which a unit is used. In this way, a chiller from Mitsubishi Electric can be used in three different categories:

  • As a comfort chiller for room air conditioning
  • As a process chiller with a high operating temperature
  • As a process chiller with a medium operating temperature

It is therefore important for manufacturers to be included in project planning by means of building-specific and design-specific information. This is the only way to ensure that the suitable ErP compliant design can be provided for each individual use case – especially in the context of mixed applications covering both room air conditioning and process cooling.

KEY EFFICIENCY VALUES

Following the entry into force of Directive 2016/2281 for comfort chillers, it is obligatory to state the Seasonal Space Cooling Energy Efficiency (ηs,c) and the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER value) in cooling mode.

In the case of air- and water-cooled process chillers with high and medium operating temperatures, the Seasonal Energy Performance Ratio (SEPR) must be stated. The different calculation formulas lead to considerable variation between the partial load ratios for process chillers and comfort chillers. Process cooling features a high cooling requirement all year round, even in the case of low outdoor temperatures.
